UNC TAR Heels All-American and 3-Time NBA Champion With L.A. Lakers

JAMES WORTHY KEYNOTES CHAMBER ANNUAL BANQUET January 29, 2009
More than 260 members and friends of the Montcross Area Chamber filled Cramer Mountain Country Club to celebrate another successful Chamber year, honor award winners and hear keynote speaker James Worthy. Worthy, a Gastonia native, led the UNC Tar Heels to a national championship in 1982 and the L.A. Lakers to three NBA championships during his 12 seasons tieh the team. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2003. In his comments, Worthy paid tribute to those who influenced his life, including his parents, his local Boys Club, junior high and high school coaches, and especially former UNC basketball coach Dean Smith. He encouraged the businesses and communities of Gaston County to apply the same principles of teamwork he learned on the basketball court to get through the current economic crisis.
Citizen of The Year: The Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Preston and Martha Taylor for conceiving and establishing a "Feed The Children" program with the help of the congreation at Belmont's First United Methodist Church. The program feeds hundreds of children on the free school lunch program during Christmas and Easter school breaks.
Business of The Year: McKenney Family Dealerships was honored as Business of the Year for more than 25 years of community service and contributions to scores of local nonprofit organizations. Owner and president Ray McKenney accepted the award and called on the business community to do more, not less, for the community during these dificult times. He said Main Street must solve its own problems and not look to Wall Street for the solutions.
Officers for 2009: Bryan Dalton of 321 Equipment Company was installed as Chamber board chairman for 2009. Other officeers are Chair-elect Eddie Lunsford of First National Bank, Treasurer Timothy Roberts of Gottage Keepers, Secretary Delta Sanders of Belmont Parish Nurse Ministry, and Past-Chair Titus Workman of the Gaston Gazette.
