Dream for Harper Park comes true in Stanley
Years of
fund-raising, grant writing, and blood, sweat and tears paid off Saturday, May 11, 2013, in
Stanley with the dedication of Harper Park, named for the late Ron Harper and
Katherine Harper, whose major gift spurred the project to success. A large
percentage of Stanley residents turned out for festivities, ceremony,
refreshments and fun. Town Parks and Recreation Director Tug Deason was
commended for conceiving the park and working for years to make it a reality.
Deason was awarded the Chamber's Harley B. Gaston Public Service Award for 2012
for his dedication to building the park. More than $1.2 million was raised for
the park, without any cost to the Town of Stanley. More information at www.harperpark.org.

selected to take one shot from more than 175 yards, with a million-dollar prize
to be paid over 40 years on the line, but his attempt came up short.

EDC Chairman Duane McCallister urges support for Parkway. |
Business Buzz group learns building Parkway could mean 18,000 more Gaston County jobs
 |
|
Stanton Enterprises
Event Sponsor |
18,000 Gaston County jobs are at stake in the debate over the Garden Parkway, Chamber members and friends learned at Bussiness Buzz @ Breakfast in The Haid at Belmont Abbey College. That's how many jobs Gaston is projected to gain over the next 25 years, if the Parkway is built. Gaston County Economic Development Board Chairman Duane McCallister presented the program, based largely on the results of a new study on the Parkway by UNCC economist Dr. John Connaughton. The study also focused on how Gaston County lags far behind other counties surrounding Charlotte in jobs, population growth, education, home values and tax base. The study says Gaston's isolation from Charlotte's growth because of the Catawba River is largely responsible for the county failing to keep pace with its neighbors. The Parkway connecting southern Gaston County to the airport area in Charlotte would help reverse that trend. McCallister urged supporters to contact legislators and let them know the Parkway is essential to Gaston County's economic future. The Chamber Board of Directors has adopted resolutions in support of the Parkway. For more information and a list of key legislators to contact, go to this website:

BUSINESS BUZZ
Water and wastewater worries
top topic at meeting of mayors
A looming crisis in water and wastewater utilities among Gaston County's small towns dominated the discussion period when the mayors of Montcross Area towns (Belmont, Cramerton, Lowell, McAdenville, Mount Holly and Stanley) spoke at the Chamber's first Business Buzz at Breakfast meeting Friday.
After the mayors made presentations about issues, challenges and accomplishments in their towns, questions from the audience sparked an intense 20-minute discussion about the need for a county-wide effort to solve water and wastewater problems.
Chamber Board Chair Julie Roper of PSNC Energy presided and said Business Buzz is a project of the Board of Directors that will be held quarterly to address major issues facing the communities of the Montcross Area. (Other mayors in the photo, from left, are: Belmont Mayor Richard Boyce, Stanley Mayor Frank Guida, Cramerton Mayor Ronnie Worley, Lowell Mayor Judy Horne and Mount Holly Mayor Bryan Hough.)
